Methodology
State-level average credit card balances come from Experian's State of Credit Card report (2024 Q3). National totals (household debt, credit card, mortgage, auto loan, student loan, and HELOC balances) come from the New York Fed Household Debt and Credit Report. Revolving credit outstanding comes from the Federal Reserve's G.19 Consumer Credit release. The national average credit card balance is Experian's separately published consumer-debt-study figure, which uses a newer window than the state-level table — treat the two as related but not directly summable. Every figure above links to its primary or directly-quoting source.
None of this data includes per-capita balances or delinquency rates — those weren't available from a verifiable primary source at data-collection time and are intentionally left out rather than estimated.
